Are You Getting The Most Out Of Emotional Freedom Technique?

When Carol Look does meridian tapping, she often does both negative and positive rounds of tapping. With meridian tapping you take a target statement and measure how true it feels, rating it from 0 to 10. You tap and you check. The traditional negative round of tapping aims to bring down the anxiety, or whatever the feeling is, closer to 0. Carol usually does one or two rounds focused on the issue or problems, then a positive round to see if it brings anything else up.

In Carol’s experience this positive round can be particularly effective at bringing up corresponding limiting beliefs, but if you attempt it to early you may get a strong, negative reaction. The positive version of the statement “I am depressed” is “I am not depressed,” and if you ask a person to say that positive statement too early they may tell you it’s flat out not true. The positive statement really only serves to show the person there is a choice in their statements, but if they’re still angry, hurt, cranky, or tired they may not get it, and may perhaps feel even more resistant.

Though Carol usually completes one round of negative tapping followed by a round of positive tapping, she sometimes combines the two. By doing this the brain that is focused on the negatives of “I can’t” or “I’m not good enough” becomes confused by all of the “I can” statements. When the positive mixes with the negative the person begins to understand that there are options. They become excited about the possibilities. This technique is quite effective for practitioners who are already experienced with meridian tapping.

The goal of all energy tapping is to change the stuck patterns we see in our behavior by addressing the flow of energy within our bodies and minds. When you’re trying to change a behavior, sometimes the element of surprise is you’re most handy tool. When someone or something is surprised they almost always move, so if your target is to make an energy blockage unstuck, surprise will work for you. Say a positive statement like “I am enough.” How does that make you feel? If you feel uncomfortable that’s a brilliant piece of information for you to know, and now you can tap on that feeling – feeling inadequate. Now you should ask yourself “How do I know I’m inadequate? Who told me I’m inadequate? I wasn’t born that way – where did I get this idea that I’m inadequate?” Go deep with these questions, and pretty soon you’ll see that “When I was x years old, Y and Z got mad at me and told me I wasn’t good enough.” Now that you know this you can tap again: “Even though Y and Z told me I wasn’t good enough, I love and accept myself anyway. Even though I don’t feel good enough I love myself anyway.” You must be mindful to be honest with yourself and not sugarcoat your emotions. Talk to yourself and your healer like you would talk to your best friend – let it all hang out and get to the truth of the matter.

When you are not tapping, talk about the issue as if you are talking to your best friend about it. Speak the truth to access those emotions and try not to be too analytical. This doesn’t have to be perfect. By using the idea of talking about things with your friend, you will speak from a deeper, more feeling place rather than from an intellectual one.

Having a specific target is key. Being clear about the feelings allows you to focus your target for tapping. Tell the truth about the issue and your feelings so that you can get to the root of it. Imagine you are talking to your friend and really get to the core of it all – the emotions, the guts of the issue. Be in a place of truth when you complete these techniques.
